BACKGROUND
As I was browsing the App Store for an app to help declutter and organize my closet, I realized a lot of the ones I found were too complicated or confusing to use. I decided to take matters into my own hands in a personal project to create a digital closet mobile app to improve my skills as a designer.
Teaming up with a developer, we were able to bring my idea to life. With Clozzie, users can simplify their closet and easily create new outfits with existing their items.
PROBLEM
How might we make the task of digitizing and organizing a closet easier and more immersive?
SOLUTION
I designed Clozzie, a digital closet mobile app that gives users the ability to efficiently catalog clothing items, organize their closet and create new outfits. Users also can quickly view all of their items and outfits in one place.
Upload and organize clothing items
Add items from your photo gallery or snap a photo and Clozzie will remove the image background. Fill in item details to keep things organized.
Mix and match to create new looks
Play around with your items in Clozzie's Outfit Creator to build new outfits.
Create outfit collections with Lookbooks
Whether you're looking to create an inspiration album or planning outfits to bring on an upcoming trip, you can do it all with custom Lookbooks.
View items and outfits in one place
Get a quick view of everything in the Closet and Outfits tabs.

MY CONTRIBUTION
As the product designer for this project, I conducted research with a competitive analysis, created a user flow, and crafted wireframes and prototypes. Throughout the process, I worked closely with a developer who offered valuable feedback on the design from a technical standpoint.
DESIGN RESEARCH
To better understand the landscape of existing digital closet apps on both the App Store and Play Store. I downloaded and tested six different apps (five direct competitors, one indirect) over the course of a week.
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS FINDINGS
Most apps provided item cataloging and outfit creation features, but some were locked behind a premium plan, limiting their functionality.
Apps with extra features such as an in-app social network, outfit planner, or resale marketplace felt cluttered and overwhelming.
Apps using AI to automatically input clothing item details often mislabeled them, requiring users to manually re-enter it.
IDEATION
With the research findings in mind, the developer and I spent some time brainstorming features and solutions together. We had decided early on to launch an MVP (minimum viable product) as our Version 1, in order to provide a hands-on experience for user feedback.
Due to this, a one-month timeline was imposed for both design and development. Given the tight schedule, our approach was streamlined to focus on a more simplified UI and a few key features:
Allow users to add clothing items
Ability to add clothing item details such as category, color, and brand
Automatic image background removal tool
A simple but efficient outfit creator
USER FLOW
Following the competitive analysis, I mapped out a tentative user flow.
MVP LAUNCH
For the sake of time on this project, I chose to skip sketching and jumped straight into creating wireframes. After countless lo-fi and mid-fi wireframe iterations (nearly 100!), I finalized the screens for Version 1.

CLOZZIE VERSION 1
User Feedback
Version 1 of Clozzie officially launched on the App Store and Play Store on November 9, 2023.
I invited friends and family to try out the app for a few days and conducted usability tests with five individuals. My goal was to evaluate the app's user-friendliness, test if the interactions felt natural, and identify any potential bugs or frustrations they may have encountered.
I created an affinity map to better understand the feedback.
UPDATES BASED ON FEEDBACK
Taking into consideration the usability testing insights, I made several improvements and feature updates to Version 2 of Clozzie.
ACCOUNT CREATION
Before
Testers faced several issues during account creation:
One tester's verification email went to their junk folder.
Another user unknowingly mistyped their email, leading to not receiving a verification email without understanding why.
After
To address these issues, the following updates were made:
A toast message that remains on the main page replaces the alert message on the account creation bottom sheet.
The updated toast message displays the user's email used for account creation.
Users are now prompted to check their spam folder.
ITEM CREATION
Before
Testers expressed the following:
The current item categories were too vague/not specific enough.
Requested more colors and the option to select multiple colors for one item.
Disliked mandatory details such as brand and color.
After
The following changes were made:
More colors added with option for multiple selection.
Subcategories added.
Besides the category, all item details are now optional.
ERROR VALIDATION
Before
Testers faced a lack of the following:
When image upload fails, the screen reverts to the default item creation page without indicating the issue.
Lack of proper photo-taking tips.
After
To tackle these issues:
Image creation flow now displays a toast message for upload failure reasons (image too large, long processing time, etc.)
The loading text also now updates for processes exceeding 10 seconds.
Photo-taking guide added.
BRANDING & DESIGN SYSTEM
With my background in marketing, I understood the importance of a strong brand identity. Though I lack experience in brand design, this task proved to be both challenging and enjoyable for me.
My responsibilities included creating the brand kit, designing the website, and creating the preview graphics that would appear on the App Store/Play Store.

METRICS AND ANALYTICS
Clozzie utilizes PostHog to monitor analytics. Prior to launch, we outlined the following as our goals.
50 Daily active users
5000 total user count
10 App Store ratings/reviews
5 paid users
This is where are our progress stands as of April 2024:
Daily active users
Total user count
App Store ratings
Paid users
FUTURE STEPS
Clozzie is a work in progress, so I intend to continue listening to feedback from the userbase and iterating on the existing design for future versions. We plan to encourage users to leave reviews and ratings, as well as submitting feature requests that will be considered.
POTENTIAL UPCOMING FEATURES
There are many updates and features in Clozzie's backlog that require more user research and testing, below are just a few:
Login via Google account and Apple ID
Outfit of the day (OOTD) planner
More features for Clozzie Pro — Clozzie's premium subscription
Possibility of integrating AI into the item creation process to auto-fill details
Customizable app themes
